When analysing E Media...

When analysing E Media...

  • Don't just passively read/look at the articles/posters
  • Consider it a Section A text. Deconstruct it using usual media forms
  • WEBSITES! How many of you have actually looked at the official websites for each of your texts? Usually very intertextual.
  • Social Media Campaigns - Opportunities for User Generated Content (audiences doing the hard work) (Viral Marketing)
  • Opportunities for Meshing/stacking (if applicable to question)
  • Video Games are e-media. Both console games and smartphone games.
  • Apps/play along/get involved

Task:

Open at least 6 browser tabs...

  • Visit the text’s official website
  • Search the text’s social media campaigns
  • Look for an app/game

Use the following question for guidance and create an A3 plan…

“Institutions construct large, interconnected universes to maximise profits.” Evaluate how synergy, intertextuality and other USPs have been used in the products in your cross-media study. Support your answer with reference to a range of products from three media platforms.

Analysing the Print Platform...

When analysing print...

  • Don't just passively read/look at the articles/posters
  • Consider it a Section A text. Deconstruct it using media forms
  • Look at style, word length, connotations, representation, costume, composition, mise-en-scene, eye line, tone.
  • Look at codes and conventions, representation of star power and construction of character, brand values of production.
  • Are they traditional (if so, why) or countertypical (also why)
  • Features, such as ‘cosplay of the month’ = UGC

Task:

Open at least 6 browser tabs...

  • Search the name of your text + poster
  • Search the name of your text + magazine or ‘Empire’ or ‘Total Film’

Use the following question for guidance and create an A3 plan…

“In order to generate appeal, media institutions must incorporate a mix of traditional and non-traditional representations in their texts.” Evaluate how this is true in your cross-media study. Support your answer with reference to a range of examples from three media platforms.

Picking Case Study Texts

Lesson Aim...
  • Your mission, is to investigate and decide upon two CS texts.

Lesson Outcome...
  • By the end of the lesson, SOME students will have picked (and had approved) their two CS texts. Some students will have began preparing for the mini exam question.

Success Criteria...
  • You will have used the provided assessment sheet to judge your decision, had a one-to-one, and submitted two texts to the overview document provided by Mr Rose.

What Makes A Good Case Study Text

RANGE

You MUST ensure you have the opportunity to talk about all those things in order to prepare.

You do not know the exact questions.

We must preempt that your CS has range, scope and potential to talk about anything they may ask you to focus on.

Why sci-fi / fantasy / comic book genres?

Looking at current movie trends...

"Why now? Why are comic books so prevalent? Why are these movies doing so well? In some ways, we’ve become a genre that you can do well now given the world of computers and perhaps it’s also just a time in the sun. You went to the movies in the 50’s and 60’s you went to a western. So at this point, you’re going to a superhero movie. It’s taking over that same black hat, white hat myth-making surface."

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are a duo of American screenwriters and producers. They are known as the screenwriters of The Chronicles of Narnia film franchise, as well as for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having written the three Captain America films (The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier, and Civil War) and Thor: The Dark World, and created the Agent Carter TV series.

Arguably the ‘sci-fi / fantasy / comic book’ genres will provide you with this range.

  • They are current and contemporary for a reason.
  • They are successful and mainstream for a reason.
  • They are massive, marketing machines for a reason.

Their ability to take advantage of synergy, star power, technological convergence and media meshing/stacking, across a range of platforms means they are perfect for this particular Case Study.

You have a full hour for research!

Assess the suitability of potential texts by cross referencing them with the 'exam speak' sheet from last lesson. BUT don't waste time. Be ruthless and efficient. Sooner you decide, the soon your research can begin.

Do they provide range? Are they suitable? Is there scope and depth?

Once decided, confirm them with Mr Rose by typing them into the Google Table and START RECORDING RESEARCH. Use the A3 sheets provided to start to record this research in your CS document.

1 - You know your texts. Away you go!2 - You have some ideas, you need to quickly weigh them up and eradicate some.3 - You have no idea and you need to talk to someone about ideas.

We will use this preliminary research next lesson to answer an exam question.
