‘Representation’ in my Case Study

Lesson Aim...
To identify REPRESENTATION in your case study texts, across all three platforms.

Lesson Outcome...
By the end of the lesson, ALL students will have researched and made notes on their texts, and identified where REPRESENTATION occurs, as well as determining what kind of REPRESENTATION is being used and why.

‘Representation’ in my Case Study

Use MEDIA LANGUAGE + MEDIA THEORISTS.

  • How do your CS texts conform to traditional representation? (stereotypes)
  • How do your CS texts break away from traditional representation? (countertypes)
  • How is this constructed across all three media platforms? (moving image, print, e-media)

Don't be afraid to argue that there are elements of both in a single character (hybrids)

This will give you L4 criteria for ‘critical autonomy’ and ‘evaluation’

Success Criteria...

  • DETAILED A3 mindmap considering all three texts with ML + Theory
  • DETAILED A3 table considering all three texts with ML + Theory
  • DETAILED Google Slides mind map considering all three texts with ML + Theory
  • Combination of the above methods to maximise revision aids

Practice exam question...

Next lesson you will handwrite an answer to the following question using your preliminary research…

Consider how imaginative techniques are used by media products from your cross-media study to attract and maintain audiences. Support your answer with reference to a range of examples from three media platforms.
(P) One way my case study texts use imaginative techniques, could be the use of
Star Power / Stereotypes/ Countertypes / hybrid representation

(Ex) For example, in _______ there is the inclusion of _______

(Ev) This is important because _______

(Ex) Another example could be the use of _______ in _______(Ev) This is important because _______

Model Answer

(P) One way my case study texts use imaginative techniques, could be the use of
Star Power.

(Ex) For example, in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there is the inclusion of Harrison Ford, constructed across various platforms as the Richard Dyer “Good Joe” and “Tough Guy” archetypes.

(Ev) This is important because in a fictional world where the binary opposites of ‘good vs evil’ are so important, the brand values of Harrison Ford (charismatic, strong and courageous, seen in the limited edition EMPIRE Film front covers) suggest to audiences that he would play the Proppian Hero. This also brings in personal identity for existing fandoms by generating connotations of nostalgia, and bridging the gap between the original series and the new film. This is shown in his status as a ‘legendary’ character in Star Wars Battlefront, the console video game.

(Ex) Another example could be the use of Jennifer Lawrence in THG: Mockingjay 2.
(Ev) This is important because _______
